The Happiest Birthday on Earth: The Best Finds for a Disney-Themed First Birthday Party

🎀 The “Happiest Birthday on Earth” – Why I Chose a Disney-Themed First Birthday

Motherhood is the most beautiful, brutal, soul-shaping experience I’ve ever known. It's challenged me, changed me, and filled me with more love than I ever thought I could carry. So when it came time to celebrate Riley Jean’s first birthday, I didn’t just want a party — I wanted magic.

My husband and I have always loved Disney — the attention to detail, the imagination, the way it allows you to escape the ordinary. That’s exactly what I wanted for Riley's big day: a moment where we stepped out of reality and into something wonder-filled and unforgettable.

✨ Why Disney?

Each Christmas, we sit down as a family and write our goals for the year on tiny pieces of paper, then tuck them into a clear ornament. The next year, we open them up and reflect. One of my goals that year?

“Throw Riley an over-the-top, ridiculous birthday party.”

And what’s more over-the-top — but practically perfect in every way — than Disney?

This wasn’t just a party. It was a milestone.
It was one full year of being a family, not just a couple.
One year of growing into the role of mom and dad.
One year of loving, learning, surviving, and thriving.

So yes — I celebrated big. Because Riley deserves big. And because this season? It’s fleeting.

We’ve talked a lot about the idea of Riley being our one and only. Which means I only get so many chances to throw magical, themed parties like this. And I’m making the most of every single one.

🏛️ The Vision: Disney Meets Pastel Magic

I wanted guests to walk in and feel the heart behind every detail. I wanted them to see the dedication that went into planning — because it reflects the same dedication we pour into parenting Riley every day.

So, I brought the magic to life with a mix of DIY, Amazon finds, and a whole lot of hot glue. Here’s how we brought the "Happiest Birthday on Earth" to life:

🏡 The Bounce House Castle

We placed the white castle bounce house in our backyard. Because of the angle of our fence, guests couldn’t fully see it from the road — but the moment you stepped outside, it was massive. And magical.

Large white bounce house styled like a castle with glitter-filled beach balls inside, sitting in the backyard on a sunny day with a welcome mat and sock station set up outside.

The bounce house was filled with clear beach balls with glitter in them, which made it feel like a real-life Disney dream. My nephews, friends’ kids, and every child there ran in and out of it for hours. Most guests thought we had rented it — and when they found out we owned it? Total "Leave it to Katie" moment.

It was a splurge, but worth every penny. I chose a castle because, well... what’s Disney without a castle?

Thinking about buying vs renting? Consider:

  • Renting means you’ll have setup/take-down handled, but often comes with cleaning or damage fees

  • Buying means a one-time cost, long-term use, and you control how it's cared for

  • It does require storage space and time to set up/take down, but it’s yours for years of use

❄️ Mickey Ice Molds

I used Mickey-shaped ice molds filled with edible glitter and froze them on baking sheets for stability. I used them in:

  • Champagne buckets

  • An inflatable pool filled with drinks outside

Tips:

  • Only fill 3/4 of the mold to prevent overflow

  • Freeze in layers for a cleaner look

  • Layer fancy ice on top of regular ice to make it last longer

🚖 Disney Tattoo Bar

We created a little tattoo station with a basket of Disney temporary tattoos, a sign that said "Tattoo Bar," and wet wipes. Everyone got involved — kids, adults, even toddlers were covered in characters.

It was simple, budget-friendly, and an absolute hit.

🧵 Disney-Themed Snacks

On the kids’ table, I used small clear containers to hold Mickey-shaped Goldfish and Mickey fruit snacks, complete with little scoops. It was easy, clean, and tied into the theme.

For toddler snacks: keep it simple, fun, and shaped like Mickey if possible. Riley will eat just about anything if it looks like a mouse.

🎈 Pastel Mickey Balloons

I used these to top the balloon towers on my front porch. They held their shape beautifully for two days and added such a cute visual moment as guests arrived.

😜 Mouse Ears for Everyone

I created a "Grab Your Ears" station with a sign that read, "We've got ears, say cheers!" I attached over-the-door ear holders to a pink photo arch sleeve and displayed the ears out front.

Even though not everyone took a pair, the photos, the joy, and the touch of magic made it one of my favorite touches.

📸 My Favorite Moments from the Day

Here’s what I’ll hold onto forever:

  • Family who showed up: Riley’s the baby on my side, and one of 18 grandkids on my husband’s. Seeing so many people travel just for her meant everything.

  • Dessert bar joy: I built the dessert spread with so much intention — and yes, I sampled everything. It was everything I imagined.

  • A surprise visit from my best friend: She and her family stopped in on their way home from a tournament, and it meant the world.

  • Birthday morning pancakes: We made pink pancakes on a special birthday plate and ate them on her nursery floor. Just the three of us. Happy tears and all. My favorite moment of the entire day.
